First Day of School: Big Kids

Today was the first day of school for the big kids.  This year they are both in high school:  a freshman and a junior.  They are way past the age where they like to have their photo taken on the first day of school so getting them outside, standing next to each other, and smiling is a chore to say the least.  I was able to get some great shots of them where they were smiling (!) and looking natural (!!).  Unfortunately when I got the pictures on my computer I was very disappointed when I had 24 shots that looked exactly like this:


What the heck????  The lens cover was not on, it was still in my pocket.  I could not figure out what the problem was.  My husband took one look at my camera and figured out that I had the manual setting on with an extremely fast (1/1600) shutter speed.  There was no way that the photos of the big kids taken on my shady porch would have turned out.  In my rush to get the pictures taken I did not look closely at the settings.  Argh!

Luckily, later in the day I was able to get some great shots of the big guy:
